Lodge a disposal notice
If you sell or dispose of a vehicle, you must notify Service SA. If you don’t, you could be held responsible for parking and other driving offences until the new owner transfers the registration into their name.
If you want to cancel the registration rather than transfer it to the new owner, you must also do this within seven days.
Details you need to know to fill the form for Registration / Licence Cancelation
Vehicle Information
- Registration car plate number
- Year of make
- VIN/Chassis number
- Engine number
Seller Information
- Name/business of Seller
- Address
- Date of taking away and the selling price
- Licence/Customer number
New Owners Details
- First and Last name/business of Purchaser
- Date of birth
- Address
- South Australian driver's licence or client number
- the date and time of sale, and the selling price.
The details listed above will be required when filling out the Vehicle Registration / Licence Cancellation forms.

If you don't authorise the transfer of the remaining registration to the buyer (and elect to cancel), you must declare this when lodging online. You should advise the buyer that the vehicle will be unregistered. Cancellation is not automatic and must be completed separately.

Other ways to lodge a disposal notice
The disposal notice can be found on the vehicle's registration details certificate. Both the buyer and seller must sign the disposal notice.
If you wish to cancel the registration you must do so within seven days.
If you do not authorise the transfer of the remaining registration to the buyer (and elect to cancel), do not sign the transfer papers. You should advise the buyer that the vehicle will be unregistered. Cancellation is not automatic and must be completed separately.
